Intergenerational events can help reduce isolation and loneliness and increase inclusion of older adults in our community. The Age Friendly Coalition has organized two intergenerational bike rides in cooperation with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and plans to make them annual events.
In the spring of 2024, the Coalition received a grant from the Peninsula Health Care District to conduct a pilot study entitled Intergenerational Games for Healthy Aging. We are working with Parks & Recreation, local schools, youth organizations, senior housing providers and other organizations to create events that bring together older and younger people from diverse backgrounds to participate in activities that promote mental stimulation, social interaction, and physical activity. The long-range goal is to make intergenerational games a staple of health supporting program offerings in San Mateo and a vehicle for creating long-term relationships between members of different generations.
