San Mateo’s Age Friendly Journey
In 2020, the Age Friendly Task Force was formed to prepare San Mateo’s application to join the AARP’s Age Friendly Communities Network, under the guidance of CAFÉ, which had a contract with the County to assist cities with their applications. San Mateo’s application was approved by the City Council and submitted to the AARP on September 24, 2020, with a letter from the mayor.
By submitting the application and being accepted into the Age Friendly Communities Network San Mateo committed to actively engage with residents and local advocates to make San Mateo an Age-Friendly place to live.
The AARP’s acceptance started a two-year period within which San Mateo had to submit an Action Plan, which explains the City’s overall approach to becoming more age-friendly. The Plan was developed jointly by City staff and members of the Task Force and submitted to the AARP in November 2022. Parallel to development of the Action Plan the Task Force began implementation of some of the projects proposed in the Plan.
In 2024 the Task Force became the San Mateo Age Friendly Coalition, with the goal of continuing implementation of Action Plan goals and projects and encouraging the City to implement the goals for older adults outlined in the 2040 General Plan.
